Bring It On, STRONG!
It feels pretty great to be 52! It feels even better to be bringing it in STRONG💪What Strong means to me is being able to live the life you want to live and to do the things you want to do to the fullest.
Since the beginning of June I've been getting my STRONG on. I did my first Spartan RACE and I jumped right in and did the most challenging event the BEAST. People thought I was crazy to choose that as my first Spartan race. The BEAST is the big daddy of Spartan Races. I finished first in my age group and in the middle of the elite.
Originally my competition coach wanted me to choose between the race or competing at Fitness Universe because it would be too hard to fuel my body for the race and lean me out in time for competition. She also thought it was going to be challenging enough for me to do 3 shows in one day. I usually compete in fitness and bikini but I had decided I wanted to take a stab at Figure too. I had my own personal Fitness Universe Trifecta going on! I did bikini, fitness, and figure all in one day.
Could I have done better at the race with fuel and some pre-race taper? Yes, at mile 10 I noted that I needed fuel and would never undertake a race of this magnitude again, without decent rest and fuel.
Could I have done better to do only 1 event and no race? Maybe😘 but I thought about how I would feel if I didn’t do the race at all and I knew I would feel super disappointed. So I decided to make the first goal to complete the Beast and next to compete.
At Fitness Universe I finished fourth in fitness and fourth in figure. Could I have done better at my fitness competition? Yes there's always room for improvement on anything you do. You can't continually second-guess yourself. All you can do is work on your performance and bring something better to the table each time. On a good note though, I can't wait to see where I will finish in the elite heat next time since I did so well with no taper and barely any fuel.
One week before fitness universe I missed on a box jump. This was bizarre, considering I completed the entire Spartan beast unscathed without one mishap or a scratch. Box jumps, something I've done for 10 years straight and I had to go get stitches. Sliced to the bone! Did I let that deter me? Heck no. You see there was so some very pertinent information my coach didn't know :) I was living out my theme song for fitness universe. Each year I like my fitness routine theme to have a message that drives me forward and has meaning. The message this year was about being my authentic self and living life to the fullest, living every moment. The song got stuck in my head and my heart. My theme song was "I Lived" by One Republic. What can I say? I’m dramatic; I like to live my life large. I had to live up to it.
Part of living every moment to the fullest was attending New England Strongcamp at Cathy Savage Fitness in Boston. Something I've always dreamed of participating in. I had such a great time at STRONG camp. What I loved most besides the awesome workouts and lectures from fitness Pros Stacie Wildenhain Venagro and Andi Martin, were women empowering women with support and encouragement. I felt truly touched watching women from all walks of life, celebrating their Strong. I'm glad i got to be part of the energy, excitement and camaraderie. Every time I set my goals this year I think now if I don't do that am I going to be disappointed later? This is not something you get just sitting at home
You've got to run your own race and sometimes it's just about doing it. Nobody knows what you're capable of but you. We don't even know what we're capable of until we are put it to the test. The moral of the story is it's easy for someone that's not in the trenches to tell you what you should or shouldn't do. It’s up to you what you can live with and what you'll be happy with at the end of the day. Listen to your heart. LIFE...It's about being fully alive!
