Look Fear In The FACE

Sky walk.jpg

The time had come for us to take our youngest son Jake to LA for his fall semester at Emerson College. He needed to take his car for this particular campus which meant a 33 hour road trip! I'm not much on long car rides and I don't like to sit for long periods of time, so my family went to work on me.  I realized if I was going to go on a long trip that I would want to be able to write, study, surf the Internet, and basically be entertained, as my husband would say. I  had decided I wanted an IPad Pro with phone service for the trip and to use in my studio, and would just make a small payment monthly. The Sunday before our scheduled roadtrip my husband decided I had to have the best deal so he took me in search of a new Ipad PRO.  We only had an hour to get it accomplished before the stores were closing. When we got to the store they didn't actually have what I thought I was looking for and pretty soon after that realization, I discovered my husband wasn't even looking at IPads but had started talking to the phone guy. I was starting to get discouraged, it didn't look like I was going to have an new tablet for the trip. I started mentally reconciling that perhaps my old IPad with an added hotspot would suffice.  Before I knew it my hubby was finished with the phone guy. Crazy as it would seem, I actually ended up with better than I expected, an IPAD PRO, A 7-Plus Iphone, and a Hotspot, and the best part was it totally free and no payment. I think I'll take Mr. Mitchell along more often when I need a bargain.

I drive a hard bargain myself, the other part of going along on the trip was I wanted to visit the Grand Canyon. I have taken so many trips nearby and I had never seen it. My friend had just gone on the Grand Canyon Sky Walk and it looked pretty cool, so we decided we would all stop on the way to LA. Knowing nothing about the Grand Canyon we didn't realize that the skywalk would be on the other side, so we stopped and explored the first part of the canyon. The trails whet my appetite for more, they were gorgeous. Although I am afraid of heights, there were plenty of guardrails to make me feel secure. We spent the night after a full day of exploring at the Canyon Lodge and drove on to the skywalk the next day. We had no idea the Grand Canyon was so huge and that it spans so many miles.

When we arrived at our destination the skywalk seemed like it was going to be pretty expensive for all of us to go, but I pushed on, because we had come all this way. We weren't sure if we wanted to pay the hefty price quoted by the sales lady. I felt like well we've come all this way and I have always wanted to go here. How are we going to feel if we pass this chance to see the skywalk up?

I decided I was going to go and let my husband and son know if it was worth the price. I got into the line and found out that the price had been misquoted... ha ha and it was totally affordable. Yay, we were all going to go on the skywalk together. We didn't come all this way just to go away with regret.

Here is where the twist of the story comes; my son rushed out onto the skywalk no problem, my husband took a little time, but not much, then the person that wanted this so bad couldn't even take one step onto the glass... Me! I am deathly afraid of heights and walking onto that glass floor and knowing that I was directly over the middle of the canyon stopped me in my tracks. I reasoned with myself, "You know you're always telling everyone, what you want is on the other side of fear." Linda". The other side of myself said "This is perfectly good ground why would I want to leave it?" I even asked the guide if they had earthquakes she said "Yes all the time!" That was a big help. LOL My husband Tracy is a structural engineer and he said the structure was perfectly fine. Quickly, I decided if they had a earthquake, I would probably die anyway so I might as well enjoy the view. The reasoning went back and forth like that: The thought that finally won out was; I just kept thinking about you can reach new heights if you don't push past your fears and I didn't want to go home not having done what I pushed so hard for, because of fear.

I decided I was going to at least scoot myself out for the picture taken you see at the top of this page with my family, so I did. Then I went back, mustered up the courage and made up my mind I was going to walk the entire skywalk, slowly but surely I made it to the other side.  Once I arrived, I had to take a break before going back to the starting point.  It had taken a lot  to overcome the fear I had since childhood. I took a rest and went back to the beginning.  Now for the big finale. They say if you expose yourself to your fears you will get over them and I think they are right. My finale was I laid my face pressed down on the glass looking to the bottom of the canyon. Sweet success! Next, I wanted to look all over the canyon and I did without fear, but it was time for us to go on to the next destination on our bus ride. I can see why they saved the other part of the skywalk trip for last. I literally would not have been climbing up to the peak of the mountains and standing on top of the canyon if I had not pushed past my fear on the skywalk. I think life is a lot like that. You can't enjoy the journey and reach new heights, if you don't push past your fears. Everyone feels fear, it's those that take action even though they may feel fear, that arrive at new heights. With my newfound faith my husband even got worried because I was getting braver and braver climbing to the top and getting too close to the edge of the canyon he thought. I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would get that close to the edge or climb to the top.

Mountain Top Canyon.jpg

When we got to the end of our journey and dropped our son off at Emerson LA, I was ready for my next set of hurdles to overcome. I had decided I wanted my husband and I to go on the infamous Hollywood hike. I looked it up online for directions and realized after reading the hike info, that it was possible we could encounter mountain lions, rattlesnakes, and bears... On my. I set my alarm that evening to get up early to beat the heat, but during the night I had nightmares about encountering the animals. So when it was time to get up, I hit snooze. Mama didn't raise no dummy! I wasn't going to be a mountain lion's breakfast. No, but seriously, when we eventually  got up that morning, the reasoning was going on in my head back and forth again such as; Children and dogs and people are going on this hike. I'm pretty sure if the Hollywood Hills hike was that dangerous it wouldn't have so many participants. You love hiking, you don't want to miss it and so forth. You got it, I finally pushed past my fears and decided we were going to go. Of course as soon as we arrived, we came onto the sign that said "Caution wildlife habitat dangerous animals may be present including mountain lions and rattlesnakes. For info call park ranger."

Caution Sign.jpg

As we decided to walk on, I literally saw a little dog and thought, "oh my gosh, lion bait". I'm not gonna lie, I did stay away from the brush and keep my eyes peeled for all of the animals that we may come across. The journey was well worth it. We had such a great time, in fact, the Hollywood hike was the best part of the trip. What I discovered is, exposing yourself to what your afraid of makes you stronger! Then the next time you go to do something you're afraid of, you will remind yourself I can do this! The view is best at the TOP! So when you feel fear remember that during your biggest trials, tribulations, struggles, or any battles that you may be facing that the best way to push past fear is with FAITH!

Why I Didn't Win

Why I didn't win

How many times in life have you wanted to win something or be chosen for something, a job, an award, or a giveaway. The thinking oh pick me, pick me, or I hope I win goes through your mind sometimes  just to be passed over. You wonder what those other people have they you don't. I have the answer. NOTHING! That's right, let me say it again. They have NOTHING that you don't have yourself.

I was sitting in Todd Durkin's lecture and I was hoping to win what he was raffling off. (In case you aren't a fitness buff. Todd Durkin won the Jack Lalanne Award at the World IDEA Blogfest 2017. Jack Lalanne was The Godfather of Fitness. Jack is a legend, so this award is quite an honor.

Alas, the giveaway came and went and my name wasn't called. Of course I was so disappointed, when I sat down, there it was on the table, MY RAFFLE TICKET!
I turned over and said to my friend fitness Icon Laura Mak of #MakAttackFitness "No wonder I didn't win i didn't give them my ticket!"  Then it really struck me. You have to enter to win! In the words of the famous hockey player Wayne Gretsky, "You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take."

Later in the day, I had signed up for Todd Durkin's WOW workout! Life has a way of giving you second chances to get it right, Todd had another raffle. You can bet your sweet bippy, that this time I didn't forget to enter my ticket and guess what I won a WOW book! Life Lesson received!

WOWBOOK.jpg

In the words of Linda Lu "If you don't put your ticket in, you won't win the raffle!" LOL
I will leave you with this final question How can you expect to win if you don't even put your hat in the arena? Winning requires ACTION

linda mitchell with todd and Melanie  durkin winning his WOW book.

Here are my three biggest tips on winning.

First and foremost, you have to put your hat in the arena to win, then you have to show up, next you have to go for it.

1. Put your hat in the arena!

You've got to put your hat in the arena to win. Purchase that chance, or in my case that winning ticket

2. Show up!

Showing up means being consistent even when you don't necessarily feel like it. What you do in the dark shows in the light.

3. Go for it!

Taking action is next! You have to set goals and buy that winning ticket and don't forget the most important thing, you have to enter!

In the words of Linda Lu "If you don't put your ticket in, you won't win the raffle!" LOL

A special thanks to #SWEATPINK and #IDEAFIT for this amazing opportunity!

Train Your Mind

Train Your Mind

You all know I'm such a huge fan of Podcasts. I love to educate , motivate and feed my mind when I'm working out. I feel this really optimizes my time. The mind-body connection is at all-time high when I get to listen to a great podcast and have an incredible workout at the same time. I highly recommend checking out Zlata's podcast, it is well worth the listen. Here is a link to the show

Without further ado let's dive into what I liked abut the Sexyfit Method book .There were so many brilliant take-aways . For starters, every woman deserves to feel sexy in her own body. Self-Care is sexy. Finding your passion is sexy. Doing what sets your soul on fire is sexy. Feeding your mind is sexy. Nurturing your body is sexy.

Whats not sexy? Starving yourself, hooking yourself to the cardio wagon for umpteen hours. Zlata really teaches you how to get in touch with your sexy side without shame.

Secondly, Zlata really teaches us to nurture our bodies with delicious non-processed foods. I equally love how much direction Zlata gives her readers in her book.  She teaches you how to measure with a digital scale, calculate your macros complete with an extensive food chart and app to help you understand your nutrients and what you're putting in your body. You can spend big bucks on very high-end professional coaches and still walk away with very little knowledge and virtually no understanding whatsoever about putting together a balanced macro plan. When you are finished reading THE SEXYFIT METHOD you will know how to measure, calculate, and track your macros. Zlata even has a whole section on meal-prep, grocery shopping, eating out, and food while traveling. In addition she includes a comprehensive graph  that will enable you to easily visualize your portion sizes. Zlata really gives you a complete road-map to healthy meal-planning.

I am overally psyched that there are a ton of overwhelming delicious recipes the book.   I confess the Tutti-Frutti Muffins are my absolute favorite breakfast treat. I love to make these they are easily transportable for days I need to be able to eat on the go. They are also great when I have meetings and can't just whip out a piece of chicken and start eating it. Another thing I plan on diving into big league are all of her interesting dressing and sauce combos. I'm looking forward to livening up some of my bland fitness competitor meals. I absolutely adore the tuna salad recipe as well, its just so easy to make.  I also must admit for the name alone, The Buff Babe Chia Pudding recipe has really caught my eye for a try. If you need to get a hold of me this week contact Linda Lu's kitchen where I will be busy whipping up some of Zlata's healthy delectables.

I will be featuring Zlata on The Sisterhood of SWEAT podcast in beginning of February. Check back for the link

In The Middle Is Where You Seal The Deal.

If you find yourself continually starting over...stop stopping. It's all in the follow-through. It's In the middle that we can't see the forest for the trees, but the middle is the most important part. Everyone can start off all gung-ho. It's in the middle when you begin to struggle, and you have to work, but haven't yet seen results, is where most people drop off.

It's in the struggle that the battle is won otherwise there would be no story.

My best advice  to anyone is to be consistent. The beginning is easy, the middle is where the rubber meets the road and the work is done.

The end is where you have worked through the middle to achieve your desired result. The end is where you do your Champion Victory Dance. It may seem like people have just arrived at that perfect place or that they just fell on that mountain top, because you never saw the work that went into it. The work was done during the middle, in the cold dark lonely hours, in between the beginning and the end.. You never get to the top of a mountain with out climbing. You never get to a goal worth achieving without the work! AKA THE MIDDLE!

The middle can feel lonely, uninspiring, boring, and tiring, with no end in sight. When you feel ready to throw in the towel and are ready to give up is usually when you have almost reached the top.

Rest assured the middle is is the hardest part. It is the part where you work and you have to hold the faith that what you can't see yet from all of your hard work will pay off. Sort of like when you plant seeds and wait for them to sprout and bloom. You can't see your perfect work yet, but with water, weeding, sun, and time you will bloom.

Jump Into Greatness

Steve Harvey is always telling you that you have to jump, to reach your dreams and get uncomfortable.

How I came to be at ‘The Summit of Greatness”, I jumped.

I have been a fan of the Lewis Howes podcast only since this summer when I listened to him reveal some very difficult and very personal stuff about himself. I could relate as I had suffered from a similar experience. Listening to that podcast literally changed my life.

I am such a positive upbeat person to be around. By looking at me you would never know the guilt and shame that I was hiding inside.  I never realized how much this had affected my life in so many ways.

Listening to Lewis I realized that I had been carrying around the guilt and shame of an incident since I was eight. I kept it hidden deep down in my soul. I will talk about this more in a future podcast.

I have been listening to Lewis's podcast every week since the first time. So when I found out he was having an event in Columbus, Ohio I really wanted to go as I live close, but budget was squeaky tight.

Much to my astonishment,  Lewis Howes liked my webinar photo and the rest is history. I haven't been on Instagram that long and I don't really know that many people on there. So imagine my surprise when I look down at my Instagram photo and I realized that Lewis Howes who has well over 2 million followers liked my webinar photo. What? Totally random, lol. I got pretty excited and yelled woo hoo from my chair. I thought about sending him a message but that made me feel afraid, and uncomfortable. What would he think? Would he reply? Would he think I was weird? Who is this chick?  Then I wondered if this is what Steve Harvey's always talking about when he tells us that you've got to jump when going after your dreams, get uncomfortable, and seize the opportunity. So I sent Lewis a message. He said how can you not come? We worked it out .Much to my astonishment, I was going to get to go..

The Day of Greatness #1 started with the most amazing intros by Lewis that I’ve ever witnessed. Each introduction started in a darkened room with a troupe of lighted drums, music, and positive words flashing across the screen with a life-size picture of each guest.  Each guest felt so incredibly honored that they gave their all, making for an unsurpassed experience for all who were lucky enough to attend.

When a weekend starts with "Don't stop believing” by Journey, Lewis Howes, and Bulletproof Coffee you know it's going to be epic.

I wasn't sure what to expect as Lewis introduced the first speaker Kristina Carrillo Bucaram, author of “The Fully Raw Diet”.

Kristina’s story was incredible. I love being pleasantly surprised. Here is a little bit of Kristina's story

She had been very sick in high school and was diagnosed with diabetes. Although she was going to be the valedictorian of her class, Kristina had missed so much school because of her diabetes; if she missed anymore she was not going to graduate. Someone told her she should eat more vegetables and fruit. That person changed her entire life. Kristina decided to give it a shot. She began eating vegetables and fruits for the next few weeks and then that turned into a month and all of the sudden she realized she hadn't been to a the hospital in a month since she started eating raw. She continued on and completely healed herself from diabetes. This new lifestyle turned into a whole evolution for Kristina, she really turned onto healing her body naturally through raw foods.  She was only in high school but she contacted someone that distributed raw foods to see if she could get them delivered to her house. The guy said “little lady, I only deliver to grocery stores.” She negotiated with him and pretty soon he offered her a fair price for 40 cases of fruits and vegetables to come to her home. That's a whole lot of raw food to come to anyone's home. Kristina began wheeling and dealing with her neighbors and they all bought produce from her and this was the start of her raw foods business which is now the largest organic co-op in the US. Kristina started her business in high school.

A couple of things stood out to me and really gave me an “aha” moment. Number one, how much you can change someone's life just making a simple statement to them. The fellow who told Kristina she needed to eat more fruits and vegetables really changed her life. The other big takeaway was that Kristina had passion behind her idea and it came from the heart. So my biggest take away from this is your message doesn't have to be complicated to be successful, it can be really simple, such as Kristina really fell in love with raw foods and wanted to share it with everyone.

I have had this message for my business burning in my heart for a while and I kept thinking it had to be more than what it was and now I realize now how much it really is.

This statement is what kept coming to me when I would think about what my why is for my brand. "I want to help women love themselves when they look in the mirror." I thought that it was too simple and that I had to make it more complicated. Then I realized how that in simplicity there's beauty. The meaning for me behind love yourself when you look in the mirror is so much deeper than the surface. I want to help build women's self-confidence and self-esteem through building their health. I believe that that is one of the best accessories a woman can wear is confidence and we all deserve to feel 100 percent great about ourselves. So really just after the first speaker I already received something pretty huge. Clarity!

After the “Summit of Greatness” speakers were finished for the day we had incredible guests every day for book signings. I drove back and forth every day and had planned on working out at lunch. The book signings were at lunch so I actually skipped my workouts. I am a workout-fanatic and I never miss a workout, but I didn’t want to miss anything. So you know it had to be good.

The first day of the Summit I had dressed to the nines in a fitted black turtleneck sweater dress, sparkly tights, and black boots. I even curled my normally straight hair. As the morning wore on I began to melt. My curly hair became poker straight again. Hot flashes had nothing on me. It was too hot, not sexy hot…… SWELTERING HOT! LOL. I knew by lunch I had to change. I put on blue-jeans and blue-cotton cold shoulder top and pulled my hair into pigtails. I was ready to finish out the afternoon listening to the dynamic lineup of speakers in comfort and then go to the book-signings.

While I was standing in the book-signing line it hit me. Stacy London was taking an exorbitant amount of time with each person.  Was Stacy telling everyone "what not to wear"?  Oh crap. I'm standing in line for Stacy London and this is what I have on?

I was pretty sure that upon meeting Stacy London that she would tell me 54-year-olds are not supposed to wear pigtails and to ditch the hot pink eyeshadow, but she did none of the above. I thought she was going to tell me "What not to wear”, but instead she began to talk to me about wearing self-esteem and self-confidence and how it helps to have it.  She said “With self-esteem and confidence, "How much more would you do in life”? “With self-esteem and confidence you would to be able to do the things you want to do in life.” Stacy was so sincere, warm and just so genuine. We shared ideas exchanged books and I made her cry when I told her I had never watched her show but I have loved her on The Lewis Howes School of Greatness podcast and that she really resonated with me.  She said that I made her cry because I liked her for her, not the show. When she signed my book it said "Always just be you"

Then Stacy London looked at my book cover and said I want your abs! What? The Stacy London from “What Not to Wear” told me she wants my abs?  Stacy London wants something I have? Literally, I drove home a little in shock with my mouth hanging open. Meeting Stacy was so surreal.

The next day I dressed like me; pink cowgirl boots, jeans, a hot-pink cold-shoulder top, and a white Leather Jacket and hot orange. I was just me and received a multitude of compliments that day. When the day ended we were presented with the art-work that everyone had created the night before at the social. It was a collaboration of sorts, participants had placed their intention for the week and artist Nick Onken had painted his creation over them.  I had not been there to create the artwork because I was working, so normally I would not have felt I should get a picture in front of it. I was on my way to the book signing, when I realized my outfit matched the freaking painting. How could I not get a picture with it? Hot pink, white, orange - it was a sign.

Stand out, be you, whether it's pink cowgirl boots, a loud laugh, or a warm smile.

What to wear is self-esteem and confidence it's always your best accessory.

I still don't know "what not to wear" but I can't wait to dive into Stacy's book "The Truth About Style” to find out.

The guest that took away all excuses was Kyle Maynard. Kyle was an incredible inspiration with all he has accomplished in life despite what we would normally consider huge limitations. He is a congenital amputee. Kyle is an award winning mixed martial arts athlete, an author, a speaker, and he climbed Mt Kilimanjaro. Kyle proved he was limitless. The one thing Kyle said that really stuck with me is “Many people have disabilities you can’t even see, but mine are visible so it gives me an advantage.” This is perhaps the most powerful, positive mindset I’ve seen. We could all take notes from Kyle’s sheer determination and undying spirit. I guess it’s only appropriate that his book is entitled “No Excuses”

The Summit weekend ended with a huge dance party at Columbus Commons, DJ Irie, Pitbull’s DJ was there to get the party started. Everything during the Summit of Greatness was off the charts. After an incredible experience at the summit I truly believed Lewis when he said the after party would be incredible.  So with a little negotiation, I talked my husband into going with me and we had a great time. So great in fact we were a little tired the next day and we laid down on the floor of my ChickFit studio. We were a little tired after dancing all night with 20 somethings year-olds. We could sit around any Saturday night but we wouldn't always have the opportunity to dance with DJ Irie, Ryan Blair, Lewis Howes, and a house full of "Greats"... As we walked away I heard “Don’t Stop Believing” again playing in the background and I won’t stop believing.

Here are some truth nuggets bombs I got from the weekend.

"Quitting doesn't prevent future failure it just prevents ever winning." Fabio Viviani

"It doesn't matter if you limp a mile a minute forward is forward." Matthew Hussey

"Don't focus on the score, focus on your contribution. “Ryan Blair

"Don't wait to be yourself you have something to give now." Danielle LaPorte

and my new catch all phrase is “Suck it up Cupcake.” Matthew Hussey

World IDEA Blogfest almost didn't happen for me. I was on the verge of quitting my Sweat Pink membership because I had applied for different opportunities and not much had come through yet. Does that ring familiar? How many times in life are we willing to give up when we are on the verge of something happening but because it doesn't happen right away we want to quit? #Sweatpink

Then it happened. It's like the universe heard me. In my inbox I was invited to attend Blogfest as one of the World IDEA Bloggers. Heck to the yes! I'm going. I have attended many conferences in 30 years and had always wanted to attend The World IDEA Conference. Pinch me. I was going first class!

I stayed with a friend in Orange County and being the little Midwestern girl that I am, was overwhelmed at first when fighting traffic on the 405 to The LA Convention Center. I felt a ball-bat and a helmet should've been included in my blogger accessories.

The first day of the conference was beyond ridiculous in meeting my expectations. I went to the opening ceremony and was so just completely enamored and enthralled by the speaker lineup! All of my favorites were there. I did my first Facebook live with members of the crowd which was highly recommended by our morning Blogfest speakers. I'm an activator as you will see later in this post.

Jack Canfield

Jack Canfield

I stood in line for Jack Canfield's book and book signing. Just the networking in the line alone was worth it. Standing next to me I met the founder of Nine Rounds of Boxing, Shannon Hudson, and another fellow Joshua Moke that had opened his own swim gym in Arizona. Needless to say by the the time I made my way through the line to Jack Canfield I had goosebumps as I summoned up the courage to pull out my book The Sisterhood of S.W.E.A.T. I spoke to Jack in length. He then signed my book and took a picture with me and our books side-by-side. I just knew this was a pivotal moment. It was electric! This was just the beginning of an adventure beyond my wildest dreams! #JackCanfield

At the bottom of the escalator came Elaine LaLaine. No way.....Jack LaLane’s "The father of Fitness"! My mentor New York best selling author Ann Louise Gittleman knew them very well. I said hi to Elaine and told her that I knew Ann Louise Gittleman and that Ann said hi then Elaine LaLane told me I have beautiful blue eyes. Elaine LaLane - pinch me - is giving me a compliment? This was just the start of more great things to come. #ElaineLalane

Ryan LEE

Ryan LEE

The rest of the day we learned about food photography and social media. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the energy dynamo Ryan Lee! When Ryan said that "The School of Greatness" Lewis Howes was going to be speaking I almost fell through my chair. What? I listen to him every day on his podcast. In fact I had just listened to a recent podcast in which Natalie Jill was on. I was so highly impressed by her that it was almost too much for my heart to take when I found out that she was also here as a presenter and I was signed up for a workout with her. #RyanLee

Day two rolled around and it was even more fabulous then the first. We learned more about linking with brands and had a round table discussion and a peer review that was eye opening . Later on we had a kick butt workout with Gunnar Peterson (trainer to the stars) and he was just so personable. He even showed me how to do a few exercises and gave us a bunch of cool Propel swag! My favorite was the Booty (Boo-Tee) Band. It works a part of the body where the thighs meet. If it's really big, it's often attractive (lol)!

Then the day of activity rolled around. I was so excited to see if all the hype about Jillian Michaels was true. In fact I worked up my courage to do another Facebook live video and it turned out even better than the first one. Jillian's workout was my favorite overall - she is beyond fabulous. She kicked it into high gear and I loved every minute of it. There was no downtime to be had. #JillianMichaels.

Next stop, I had two back to back workouts with Tony Horton of P90X. During this work out I made sure to get in the front row as with every other work out. I wanted to be close to the action and I also have a slight hearing loss. There was a fellow in the audience being filmed by Elaine LaLane and I thought wow, that's awfully nice of her to just be filming this random guy in the audience. Soon the random guy came over to me and asked me if it would be OK by me if I would be in some the footage and he would tag me later. Elaine LaLane took a picture with me after the first workout and then I asked her if she would do a interview with me on Facebook live. She consented and it was amazing, but the first take did not happen. There was a glitch in the system or the learning is a process. So after the second workout began with Tony Horton I asked Elaine if she would try again with me and she was so gracious she did. This time it was sweet success! I ended up staying through two hours of Tony Horton's P90X. #TonyHorton

Then on my way to the restroom the random guy spoke to me about the footage and began how he was a surfer and this workout with Tony Horton was not his usual work out. He handed me his business card and to my surprise it said John LaLane. Mama doesn't have to hit this one with the brick twice. Are you related to the Lalane's? Yes, Elaine is my mother, Jack is my father. Then it hit me beyond the surfer hair, he was the spitting image of Jack and he did hang time pretty well during the P90X workout. What a great connection! Let me ask you, do you think it was worth coming to Blogfest at this point?

Then I took Natalie Jill's work out. Thank God we weren't jumping or anything like at this point I thought. She began to fry my arm muscles and legs like toast, all with a smile. I hollered woo-hoo and heard a thud! Natalie's husband had thrown a video to me. #NatilieJillFit

The workout was amazing as was Natalie Jill. At the end she answered everyone's questions and I asked her if she would Facebook live with me. She was my best Facebook live interview yet because I knew a little bit about her from #LewisHowespodcast that I had listened to the week before.

I met Laura Mak of Mak Attack Fitness, and Katie Dunlop of Love SWEAT Fitness. I Played on the new Yogafit Indo-boards partnered by my mentor Beth Shaw, and made so many amazing connections new and old.  #Makattackfitness #KatieDunlop #LoveSweatFitness #Yogafit #Indoboard

By my last day I was so pumped. I even had the opportunity to take a different and shorter route by 5 minutes!  I said "no way bring it on 405!" When I arrived, I went to the Expo which was filled with all of the latest and greatest products for health and fitness on the planet! I'm still pretty darn psyched to have my chocolate almond Nutella by Silk and a scoop of Vital Proteins "Collagen Peptides" everyday in my morning coffee. Today I ran with new RunPhones and my blueberry orange Vega Protein shake in my beyond cool Watermelon Board glass and later I sipped on my Geisler Mineral Water in my Gym-Go Thermos between clients! I feel beyond spoiled.

#Runphones

Ruby Carter Pikes

Ruby Carter Pikes

To top it all off I worked out at Crunch on Sunset Blvd in LA with my friend and 68 year old Fitness Universe Figure Champ Ruby Carter Pikes in my new SWEAT pink hat! Which I did wear with absolute pride! What an awesome organization!

I don't know how it made it home with all of the fantastic give-aways! When I got to the LA airport my suitcase weighed 100 pounds and the guy said he would let it slide and waived me through. Hallelujah, I had fully expected to pay extra.

I had the best experience EVER and would highly recommend attending Blogfest World IDEA Conference to anyone who gets the opportunity! Well worth it from every angle; business, blogging, workouts, speakers, and products. Most of all it was loads of FUN!

Mountain Top Experience

Mountain Top Experience-
I like taking all of my Bootcamp ladies to The Smokey Mtns every year. This year we did a challenging Navy Seal Obstacle Course and 5k. Working hard as a team brings us closer together.

The particular moment that stands out to me the most is when the seal pushed us harder to climb out of our comfort zones....we climbed up the side of a cliff using a rope. As we began our ascent the sky grew dark and it began raining then hailing... A full fledged thunder storm. As we made it to the top.

Standing in the pouring rain at the top was so freeing In that moment you weren't concerned with what you looked like. Muddy soaked to the skin, you just felt good about who you are and who everyone that just made it up the mountainside with you is .The sense of accomplishment and being fully alive was surreal.

Several times during the course when it became challenging, people wanted to quit, but we made it to the top of our mountain. Sweet, because the cream is always at the top! Doing something like this gives you confidence to climb out of your comfort zone in all areas of your life so you can have another mountain top experience.‪#‎MyStrongMoment‬

Be A Fruit Loop In A World Full Of Cheerios

Ever get on Facebook and feel like you should be doing more? You see people doing this, doing that, and it makes you feel like your not successful enough or that your life is boring. This may sound strange but rest in your purpose. Rest? If I'm resting how am I going to do my purpose? What I mean by rest in your purpose, is the easiest thing that you're going to do is you. Don't worry or be distracted by what others are doing or not doing. Your purpose, is what you were created to do, it's what you were born to do and why you were put on the planet. What do I mean by rest? I mean to trust. Trust that you have the skills, ability, and the knowledge to do what you're here to do. You're not here to do what I'm here to do, so don't worry about that.

Give yourself permission be a fruit loop in a world full of Cheerios. Just do you, because you'll always do you the best

A Chip and a Chair

(All of the other family members had already folded thus not in this-video) Videos with them in a future blog post.

My son wrote this powerful essay "A Chip and a Chair" his senior year in highschool. I gave a speech at Ms Fitness USA "With A Chip and A Chair you always have a chance." This was a moment in time that will forever stand in our minds and hearts. I hope it brings something to you today.

A Chip and a Chair -

The sound of poker chips tumbling dominated the small hospital lounge. In the middle sat a mountainous pile of my family members’ vast previous winnings, now put to a final test. My grandfather topped it all off with his only two remaining chips; a surprising happening, considering he was almost a master at Texas Holdem Poker. But under his circumstances it was understandable. Everyone overturned their cards for the moment of truth. Eyes darted back and forth as everyone checked their hands. It turned out that the high rollers had not won this match, but the silent underdog. My grandfather, age 86 and in the hold of cancer's grasp, won the game with a spectacular finish. Following this, my grandfather’s final poker game, he said to us all, "Right in the last hand, everyone should go all in."

Five years later, his words still echo in my mind. Everyday I look up to these words framed above my bed, to remind myself to give my all each and every second that I live; that this life is a short one and every moment is precious; and to make every day last. These reminders help me maintain a strong work ethic, motivational drive, and a guideline of hard work.

I hope that when I reach my grandfather’s age, I will be able to look back and say I went “all in”. But I realize on many occurrences I have strayed from this path. I may feel overwhelmed or stressed from the overload of tasks and goals I set for myself , and sometimes break under the weight. I may fall into slumps that last more than a week. But, nobody’s perfect; sometimes we all just need a break. Sometimes we need to have that lazy day or be that couch potato. Humans aren't frictionless machines, and just need a little "oil" once in a while. In the end I just say to myself, “It'll all be okay.” And I know it will.

Every once in a while when I feel I'm in a rut or can’t find inspiration, I watch the video containing my grandfather’s many wise words and relive the moments I had with him. He will always be in my heart and memories as my inspiration and my role model. I know this quote will carry me far in life and help me stay focused in all my endeavours. Now, it is time for me to ask you a question: Will you go all in?

Focus On What You Can Control

Focus on what you can control.

Focus on the things that you have control over. So many times you don't have any control over what is going on around you. So the best recourse is to focus on what you can control.

When you find yourself in a situation and you feel overwhelmed, ask yourself, what is your mindset like? Do you have a fixed mindset or a growth mindset?  What things do you need to work on? That is what you can control. So it may sound cliché to say, is your glass half full or half empty, but really how you think affects everything you do.

For instance a fixed mindset would be something like this. When you have a workout to do and you look at the clock and say to yourself “Drat, I’ve only completed one round in 30 minutes, there’s no way that I’m going to be able to get three more rounds finished in the next 30 minutes. The growth mindset would be, I’ve only got 30 minutes left I better pick up my pace and kick it into gear so I can get all three rounds done in my last 30 minutes. Meeting in the middle would be I have only 30 minutes left, I'm going to push so hard to see if I can get this all done or how much I can get finished, rather then I'll never make it in time.

The fixed mindset says; I want to run outside today but the weather forecast says it's going to rain all day long or well, I guess I will run another day this week.  The growth mindset would be; OK, the forecast says it's going to rain all day, but I'm going to look for that window of time that it won’t be raining and if that doesn’t happen, I’m going to run on the treadmill today.

Another fixed mindset scenario would be; I'm so overweight, I'm so behind, I feel I might as well give-up trying, I’ll never get this weight off. The growth mindset would be; I'm so excited about finding a new plan for myself to do, because I'm going to get better results this time.

Your words to yourself are the most powerful words on the planet, because what you say to yourself you believe.  Focus on what you can control, there is so much that you cannot control… so just let go and focus on the things that you can fix.

Joel Osteen would say “Don't let one setback or disappointment stand in the way of you working towards your goals. Shake it off and get a fresh new vision for your life.  You may fail 1000 times but you may get it right on 1001, so don't give up."

I tried 1000 times and then this pose happened.

What are a 1000 Salads Worth? Self-Worth?

Sarah Lyons Photo

Sarah Lyons Photo

This is such a common theme I thought I would write a blog post about it. We all suffer sometimes from lack of motivation and struggle with feeling lost. It's hard to get back on track because we may have failed and we feel like well why bother I tried so hard and now I'm back to square one. You know the feeling that because we may have failed we are failures. Well no, that's not it at all.  You know those eggs are already scrambled. So don't focus on the fact you didn't reach your goal or believe that you are never going to. Instead, find a new way to go about it and forget about yesterday.  You have to let go of your failures to be able to rise to new beginnings. Every real change comes from the inside out. Work on your mindset, realizing there is no perfect. There is no place you arrive where you will never make a mistake again.  Yes, some of your choices are what got you here. So you had a snickers bar, get over it. Even if you eat 1000 salads, the people that love you don't love you because you're perfect, they love you because of how you make them feel. Stop focusing inwards on supposed flaws and shine your light outwards. Sometimes we become so self-focused that it causes us to lose sight. Love yourself just the way you are. We are all created with a unique purpose. We are all special. So what you failed, you didn't lose 10 pounds. Did the world come to an end? Did you die? Kick self-doubt and fear to the curb and try again. Believe in yourself, we all have a gift to give

Stop tying your worth as a person to what you weigh. Is that how you estimate someone's value? Is that why you love someone because of what they weigh? Take Santa Claus for instance he is one of the most loved characters. Oprah Winfrey has had her struggles with weight loss, yet she is one of the most significant women in history. Embrace yourself; believe in your value, be it big, small, or tall. If you want to achieve a certain look, well get busy and get to work on it. I just want you to remember all that starts from within.  Love yourself today from the inside out. If you're critical of yourself, you will be critical of others. When you don't love yourself, it's hard to be there for others. Sometimes the feeling maybe like oh gosh my friends are all happily married or they all have boyfriends and girlfriends. Nobody wants to go out with me anymore. What's wrong with me? Well you can look at it that way, but I have a better solution then worrying, blaming, or shaming yourself. How about I’m lucky to have this time in my life where I can do what I want to do and go for the dreams I have. I have nothing to tie me down. I can go out have fun and I don't have anyone I have to answer to. Because, trust me, a lot of those friends, by statistics, unfortunately maybe married and divorced within five years and or they may not be so happily married. It's easy to compare ourselves and think that someone else has a better or greater life and don’t suffer the way that we do. I'm pretty sure if you think about it, you can find some things to be grateful about.

You've got to stop focusing on the problems and start working on the solutions to what you are sad about. "Everything is figureoutable" as Marie Folero would say. Don't focus on where you're at or where you've been. Focus on where you're going to go and put your energy into that, because you only have so much energy, so you need to decide how you're going to spend it, feeling sorry for yourself or reaching forward into your goals.

Get back on track

Sarah Lyons Photo

Sarah Lyons Photo

We all fall off track sometimes, to get back on track start with self-care. My self-care today started with making a breakfast of; egg whites, asparagus, jalapeno peppers, with coconut oil and spicy mustard, followed by butternut squash with cinnamon.  Here's a fun fact. Jalapeno peppers boost the metabolisim, relieve migranes, clear sinuses, and help with weight loss.  While all of the food mentioned has amazing benefits jalapenos are a new twist for me.

My Schedule is thrown off because of snow but I'm going to do a Savage work-out in the basement and listen to Lisa Nichols book on Abundance. Taking care of my body while feeding my spirit and mind.

Think about what self-care means to you . What feeds your soul and makes you feel more alive? Do more of that. Even if you only add one thing today, its one thing you haven't been doing.

Envy is a robber

Rest in your purpose. Sometimes it's all in the way we look at things. When you are going for something sometimes you think from lack, you're like if that person wins it means less for me but maybe the thinking should be either way I win. You always win when you think from the law of abundance, gratitude, and acceptance. There is something to be said for being graceful.

Be thankful right now today for what you have in this very moment. Envy is a robber it distracts from the greatness that each and every one of us have within.

Know Your Value

One of the biggest problems women face is giving themselves permission to invest in themselves. More often than not women may feel selfish when they take time away from family activities for themselves.

So I would like to say to all the women I know, there is no need to justify investing in yourself. Wanting something for yourself is reason enough. You do not need anyone else's permission to take care of and nurture yourself that is your God-given right.  We are usually the nurturers and need to refuel our tanks so we have something to give. It is good for our children and spouses/partners to recognize we also have needs. At the end of the day when we invest in ourselves we are going to be happier and will have more to give back to our loved ones.

My Sisters Of Sweat the only permission you need is your own to live in your greatness. Know your value and recognize your worth. Investing in yourself always pays.

LIVE LOUD!

PictureGroove Linda-5850 web.jpg

You've gotta grab hold of life with both hands because it is all too soon over. Life is short! LIVE, BREATH, GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY!

I've decided you can't make everyone happy and you free yourself of a lot of stress, grief, and worry when you focus on what you can control, which is making yourself happy.

Recently I had someone ask me why I do fitness when I'm 52 and not a gymnast? I guess they thought I was out of my league with 22 year olds. Well guess they didn't know, I'm in a league of my own called FEISTY!

Why do I do Fitness Competitions? Fitness Universe

Here are some of my reasons:
1. I started late and I'm just hitting my stride:)
2. I can do a 1-arm plange, the splits, and all sorts of crazy things and you know what it makes me FEEL GOOD!
3. I feel younger every year instead of older
4. I like feeling good in my own skin
5. I think being challenged makes you grow
6, I love the journey, I'm excited to wake up each and every day striving to be a better me.
7. I've experience that pushing myself keeps me feeling young and breeds confidence.
8. I improve each and every year and learn new skills.
9. I love being amazed by all of the other women and being a part of something greater then me:)

I think its important for people to realize age is a mind-set and staying vital is really all about pushing forward and setting goals regardless of the outcome. When you reach for something you are one step closer to it and one step further away from where you used to be. Until all of the sudden you're on this journey and its called AMAZING!

The heck with worrying about what other people think! AMAZE yourself! Celebrate yourself each and every day by getting out their and living your life unabashedly, unapologetic-ally, being your AUTHENTIC SELF! LIVE LOUD!

Are you on a journey or a mission?

Are you on a journey or a mission? There is nothing wrong with being on either one but it's good to be clear about which one you're on!

When you are on a journey you don't know where you're headed and you are unsure of where you'll end up. You may get blown around by the wind and feel like you are bouncing around like a ping pong ball. You are unsure yet of how to get where you're going. A journey is more about the experience of traveling from one destination to the next.  Many of us are focused so much on the destination we forget to enjoy the journey. My philosophy is you are almost always on a journey, so you might as well enjoy it.

"A journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it"

John Steinbeck

 asked a few Facebook friends what the word  Journey meant to them these are their responses;

JOURNEY! Rebecca Heck

"Dancing in my room to " Journeys" Escape Album when I was Young ! LOL/ "Also ...... Starting every day with goals to reach and enjoying the ride of reaching them and making new ones to always improve so the Journey and improvements Never End!!!!

"The good the bad the ugly!"

I believe half of achieving anything  is knowing what you want and fearlessly going after it

When you are on a mission you know what you want and everything you do has purpose and a set intention! Your mind is set on what you want to accomplish and you set plans in motion to accomplish your mission. You have a detailed plan and are 100 percent committed to backing that up with action.    You will move heaven and earth to reach your goal. You have calculated the risks and the cost to reaching your end goal. You can't rest until your mission is accomplished and will do whatever it takes to reach your objective, whether is to run the extra mile or swim the ocean or eat that yucky butternut squash your trainer is always pushing on you. A mission

moves you and drives you to do the things that will take you to completion.

On a Mission

Lisa Babcock

- If you are on a mission, there is more of a sense of urgency. Life is a journey, and I hope mine is a long one.

Linda Mitchell-  I think it's important to have both! I'm enjoying my journey more because I'm on a mission. My mission at CHICKFIT is to help women love themselves when they look in the mirror and have the ability to love themselves transfer into loving and giving support to one another. Self improvement equals empowerment."

Take The Challenge!

During the week I am always up early getting my workout in; on Saturdays I usually sleep in so my husband can get his workout in early. This morning after my husband left, I heard the treadmill going and went down stairs only to discover that my youngest son Jake was getting his workout in and I figured it would be awhile which would put me way behind on various projects I wanted to get done. My whole family has really been inspired to get fit lately, so rather than stall progress, I figured I, the all-year around fitness person, would have to wait.

Usually I like to do an outdoor workout on the weekends so I poked my head outside and thermometer says 17 degrees. Brrrrrrr! even my dog  Buster didn't want to be outside.  So I decided while I was waiting to workout I would get on FB and check out the scene. On the first post I came to, my client Amy who's a runner is bundling up for her training and in the second post I read she's done.  Mmm well what the heck I'll give it a whirl, so with a thermal shirt, hoodie, jacket, coat, long johns, sweats, thermal gloves, and a toboggan I set off for the track. In my Christmas with the Kranks gear I wondered how in the world I  was going to be able to move let alone run with all those clothes LOL. I certainly could have given Jaimie Lee Curtis a run for her money in this get-up.

When I got to the track I had to walk a good way to even get there because the place was jam packed for a basketball game. As I turned the corner I began wondering what I was thinking: the track and the bleachers were completely covered with snow. I thought about turning around and going home but I thought well after all this effort let me at least just see what I can do. So I went over to the bleachers and was thinking to myself, there is just no way I'm going to be able to do this...... well there was a hand rail. Never one to back down from a challenge, I had to give it a go. The first 3 were a little rough.... but 35 bleachers later it flipping rocked!!!! As I ran sprints and bleachers in the snow I felt like I was invincible; like I could do anything. I truly felt like ROCKY in training. The takeaway I get from all of this besides an incredible workout, is an analogy... How many times are we like that in life, thinking there is just no way I'm going to be able to do this and want to walk away when something looks insurmountable, when in reality if we would just stop waiting and get started by putting one foot in front of the other, we could achieve anything. When you do something challenging that you never knew you could do it makes you believe in yourself and that my friends is the real take away.

The next time a challenge presents itself, take the challenge because what's on the other side of pushing yourself is always worth it.

With the healthcare crisis upon us, I thought this would be a timely and relevant blog post.

Western medicine generally speaking only looks at the symptom of what’s wrong and then slaps a medicine on their patients that have side effects 10 times worse than the problem. Now with the affordable health care bill (that wording alone is a joke) our healthcare is about to go through the roof.

So I must ask this question, have you ever considered taking charge of your own health? I for one do not want to leave my health in the hands of the federal government. I am 51 and I'm not on medication of any kind, by choice I go to a holistic doctor which I pay for out of pocket. My holistic doctor always gives natural solutions. I truly believe a pound of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I eat a whole foods diet and stay away from anything overly processed as much as possible and I make sure to break a sweat daily.

Most chronic disease can be prevented by just managing what goes in your mouth. Diabetes, Heart Disease, High Blood Pressure, Obesity and cigarette induced Lung cancer in many cases are entirely preventable. I heard this statement somewhere recently and wholeheartedly agree, "Food is the most abused anxiety drug and exercise the most underutilized anti-depressant."  The alternative is also true; food can be your medicine and exercise your drug. It is worth taking the time to be mindful of what you eat.   Your healthy meals aren't just going to magically appear for you, so you must be intentional with what you do.  I ask people all the time where they live, and they reply with an address but the reality is we live in our body and that is the home we better take care of.

The real truth about healthcare is it starts with you. Be your own best friend.  Make the choice today to take your power back and begin investing your time into doing your own research on the benefits and healing properties of natural food.  I personally invite you to join my 6 weeks Whole Foods Challenge, where the focus is better health and weight loss is just a by-product.  Make your self-health a priority. Any age rocks when you’re healthy and you fuel your body with natural substances.  Reach your goals and your dreams naturally... by cutting all of the crap out of your diet and breaking a sweat daily.
